Concert Series Presents: Matthew Dane & friends In-Person
Matthew Dane-viola & viola d'amore
Ann Marie Morgan-cello & viola da gamba
Susan Ellinger-piano
Love and Loss will present some of the most intimate, emotional works by composers spanning over half of a millennium. Music of Johannes Brahms, (G Major Sonata), George Rochberg (Ricordanza), Scottish Renaissance composer Tobias Hume (Lamentation), Garth Knox (Malor me bat, based on a song from the Middle Ages), and Boulder composer Paul Fowler (premiere of a piece for solo viola d'amore). Brahms and Rochberg each wrote his piece in memory of a particularly close loved one. In addition to viola, Matt will play two different violas d'amore- one commissioned by Matt in 2013, the other built by "the Stradivarius of the viola d'amore" Johannes Eberle in 1731.
