Protest Poetry Writing Workshop

Protest Poetry Writing Workshop In-Person

“The artist’s duty is to respond to the times we are living in" - Nina Simone. But how? How do we find the words for tumultuous times or express our frustrations with coherence or beauty? In this workshop, participants will learn how to turn protests into poems, and most importantly, how to share them so that others will listen.

We will overview historical examples of the written word as protest, practice narrowing down a topic or planning an objective, learn how to use our poetic voices persuasively, and discuss how to determine an audience and share your poem once it is written.

Everyone is welcome, no writing experience is necessary! Notebooks, pens, and snacks will be provided.

Aspen Everett, Joshua Robinson, and Olivia Pearman are the co-editors of Screaming at America, a local anthology for written works of dissent. Find them at www.screamingatamerica.com.
