STUDIO 24: Traditional Yarn Making, Learn the Drop Spindle

STUDIO 24: Traditional Yarn Making, Learn the Drop Spindle In-Person

Have you ever wondered where yarn comes from, or the thread and fibers in your clothing? Join us at STUDIO 24 for an introduction to spinning - the process of turning loose fibers into usable yarn! This class will give an overview of pre-spinning fiber preparation, and hands-on experience spinning wool with a drop spindle, one of the oldest known spinning tools.
Time allowing attendees will also get to experiment with different types of drop spindles, supported spindles, and spinning wheels. Participants will take home a printed How-to-spin guide to continue their spinning journey and the length of yarn they've spun.
All skill levels welcome - please be aware that we will be handling sheep wool (which may contain trace amounts of vegetable matter and lanolin), and that spinning does require some dexterity and patience, but can also be very relaxing and productive. Similar to spinning a top, we will be spinning a drop spindle to add twist to our wool - this can be done seated or standing (or walking! though it does take practice). You will need to be able to hold the spindle around waste height, spin it, and pick it up from the ground (it is called a drop spindle!).
