(In)Justice Unveiled: A Story of Colonial Policy and Indigenous Resistance - JLF Colorado: International Literature Festival

(In)Justice Unveiled: A Story of Colonial Policy and Indigenous Resistance - JLF Colorado: International Literature Festival

What can we learn if we frame genocide and colonization in the United States as an ongoing project, rather than an artifact of the past? Through which mechanisms do persistent colonial patterns endure across history and manifest in contemporary times? Award-winning author David Heska Wanbli Weiden will unveil the numerous criminal justice policies enacted by the U.S. government that harm Native American nations and their citizens. He will examine the contemporary movement of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/Relatives (MMIW/R) as an intentional result and legacy of enduring colonial patriarchal policy. In this conversation, David Weiden will discuss the Major Crimes Act, federal sentencing regulations, and other governmental policies, while reading selections from his award-winning novel, Winter Counts.
