STUDIO 24: Making Accessible Toys and Tools

STUDIO 24: Making Accessible Toys and Tools In-Person

“Switch-adapting” is a process where electronic tools and toys can be made more accessible by adding a much larger button or switch to operate them. This supports children and adults with disabilities in participating in meaningful experiences that might otherwise be inaccessible, such as play, cooking, or controlling their environment.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will be guided through creating a switch-adapted tool or toy using makerspace materials like 3D printed buttons, and makerspace skills like simple soldering. No prior experience is required, we will provide structured step-by-step guidance.

We will provide pre-selected toys and tools for adaptation. If you do not have a person in mind who you would like to create an adapted device for, you are still welcome to attend! We will donate a number of adapted devices created during this workshop to a local school for classroom use.

Electronics Studio

From April to June, STUDIO 24 will be dedicated to playful and practical explorations of electronics. Classes and drop-in experiences will cover a variety of topics from the fundamentals of circuits and coding to creative projects that bring technology and art together. Electronics studio experiences will be facilitated by Maker-In-Residence, Ayesha Wilson, alongside Creative Technologists and community educators. Electronics studio is for everyone! Whether you're an experienced tinkerer or you're brand new to electronics, we invite you to create, learn, and explore topics in electronics in a supportive and creative community space.
