Music Around the World: Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle

Music Around the World: Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle In-Person

Celebrate the rich diversity of music from across the globe at this quarterly concert series. Each concert will feature live performances from local artists that showcase the wide range of sounds and rhythms that define cultures around the world. Experience the transcendental and melodic Norwegian Hardanger Fiddle presented by Nicolette Andres.

Fiddler Nicolette Andres is a local of Colorado, born in Evergreen. Her main instrument is the Hardingfele or Hardanger fiddle from Norway. Nicolette was always surrounded by jazz and folk music growing up, and gravitated towards these genres as she studied violin throughout college at the University of Puget Sound. After graduating in 2011 Nicolette spent time within Irish music and then Scandinavian music, eventually leading to her discovery of the Hardanger fiddle. She has been studying the tradition of Hardanger fiddle since 2020, and most loves this music because it can be three to four hundred years old, and is transcendental, wildly melodic, and expansive. It is a tradition passed down by ear with a tight-knit community. The instrument has over thirty different tunings, all different from a standard violin. The Hardanger fiddle also has four or five resonating strings, not played with the bow, that add reverberation as the other strings are played. Most of the music in this tradition is meant for dance, and Nicolette plays and dances regularly with the Boulder Scandinavian Dancers at the Avalon Ballroom. Along with performing, Nicolette teaches Suzuki violin lessons in Boulder.
