Yarn Bits: Synthetic Felting at Reynolds

Yarn Bits: Synthetic Felting at Reynolds In-Person

Presented by: STUDIO 24 Maker in Residence Heather Shulte at George Reynolds Library

What to do with leftover synthetic yarn? While plant and animal fibers are bidegradable, we all know plastics are a forever problem. This workshop will teach you techniques to use even the smallest of yarn bits to make new artwork, textures, or felt-like material. We can make sure those plastic bits stay out of the waste stream WHILE we get creative. MiR Heather Schulte will demonstrate how to card synthetic yarn into fibrous fluff, which can be used to "paint" like watercolors, when applied to a felt backing. We will use irons to lightly fuse the material. Hand or machine sewn embroidery will finish off the pieces, with detailed line work and shading. We will also learn how to make pompoms with larger yarn scraps, make longer lengths of yarn using small knots, and discuss additional ways to reuse our scraps.

Boulder Public Library presents Fiber Studio in STUDIO 24!   During this 3-month focus (October-December), we invite patrons to take a deep dive into all things fiber with workshops, classes, and drop-in activities featuring sewing, weaving, spinning, needlework, and beyond!  Workshops will be led by our Makers in Residence (Heather Schulte and Steven Frost) as well as many community partners.
