STUDIO 24: Data Weaving : Collective Weaving Project In-Person
How can we visually imagine ideas about democracy? Together, we will weave patterns into cloth, creative a collaborative textile. Our Makers in Resicence will create a coded system to translate words/phrases about democracy (either sourced from the LTC plays/community conversations or the "ballot" boxes) that will be scored for weaving. At the workshop, patrons will learn about the process of translating words into patterns, how to read the patterning sequence, and operate the looms. We will put democracy into action and weave our ideas and thoughts together.
Welcome to our first Maker in Residence program at STUDIO 24! We are pleased to partner with local artists Heather Schulte and Steven Frost: our Maker’s in Residence for our Fiber Arts focused studio. During our 3-month Fiber Studio, we invite patrons to take a deep dive into all things Fiber with workshops, classes, and drop-in activities centering skills in sewing, weaving, spinning, needlework, and beyond!

Steven Frost (they/them) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Studies at CU Boulder and an interdisciplinary fiber artist. Their research focuses on textiles, queer studies, and community development in public spaces. Using weaving, Frost combines traditional materials like yarn and cotton with non-traditional materials from a range of sources, exploring the ways history and time are embedded in materials. Frost is a Co-Founder of the Experimental Weaving Residency, Slay the Runway, and Colorado Sewing Rebellion. They were named a 2023 Mover and Shaker by Library Journal and are a former Chair of the Boulder Library Commission.
