Our Living Rights - Understanding the U.S. Constitution

Our Living Rights - Understanding the U.S. Constitution In-Person

Doors open for tea and cookies reception at 6p.m. followed by a 6:30p.m. presentation on the U.S. Constitution which has guided United States democracy for 235 years and, today, is more important than ever. University of Colorado Law professors, Scott Skinner-Thompson and Laura Dolbow will help us understand the Constitution and its role in current issues. We’ll briefly review the Constitution’s origins and how our interpretation and use have both changed and retained its original intent throughout our history, including in times of great divisions and disagreements.

Professors Dolbow and Skinner-Thompson will present how the Constitution relates to the shift of power between the branches of government, reproductive rights, and the disenfranchisement of women, minorities and transgender people. Learn how we all influence the Constitution through voting, shaping who becomes judges and determining regulatory policy.

Chris Barge, Executive Director of the Boulder Library Foundation, will moderate their discussion followed by audience Q&A.

Participants will receive information on resources for further understanding, and the first 100 participants will receive a free copy of the U.S. Constitution.

Leading up to the election, the Boulder Public Library invites all community members to rediscover the history and importance of voting in our country through our fall Democracy Series. From interactive storytimes to insightful workshops, this engaging series will foster community connections as we navigate this election year together.
